Little Tilde in Kopenhagen: vergeten reuzen

Discover the Forgotten Giants

Just outside Copenhagen, hidden in the forests and fields, you’ll find six giant wooden sculptures known as the Forgotten Giants. They are built from recycled wood and placed in nature to encourage people to explore the outdoors.

You can visit them by bike, car, or even on foot. On a sunny day, I cycled to three of the giants, passing lakes, beaches, and forests along the way. If you want to see all six, it’s best to plan a route by car. It’s a fun and unique way to escape the city and enjoy Danish nature.

Visit the world’s oldest amusement park: Bakken

Bakken is the oldest amusement park in the world, located in the beautiful forest area of Dyrehaven, just north of Copenhagen. You can easily get there by bike, train, or car.

I cycled there in about 45 minutes, following a scenic route along the beach and past Charlottenlund Fort. Entry to Bakken is free, and you only pay a small fee for the rides (usually just a few euros per ride). Make sure to bring some cash with you. With fun rides, food stalls, and a relaxed atmosphere, Bakken is definitely worth a visit!

Learn about the Vikings in Roskilde

Only 30 minutes from Copenhagen by train, Roskilde is a historic city that was once the capital of Denmark. Today, it’s a charming town with a lovely old centre, views over the fjord, and one of the best museums in Denmark: the Viking Ship Museum.

Here you can see three original Viking ships and learn all about the fascinating history of the Vikings. Combined with a walk through Roskilde’s old streets, it makes for a perfect day trip full of history and culture.

Explore Odense: Birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen

For a slightly longer day trip, take the train (around 1.5 hours) to Odense, the birthplace of Denmark’s famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. Located on the island of Funen, Odense is a lively city with plenty to see.

You can wander through the historic centre, relax in the parks, and of course, visit sites connected to Andersen’s life and stories. A local favourite is Storms Pakhus, a trendy street food market where you can try dishes from all over the world.

Visit another country: Malmö, Sweden

One of the easiest and most exciting day trips from Copenhagen is to Malmö in Sweden. Thanks to the Öresund Bridge, the train takes you there in just 35 minutes.

Malmö is a small but vibrant city with a mix of old and modern architecture, cosy cafés, and beautiful parks. The city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. With great shopping, good food, and a relaxed atmosphere, Malmö is the perfect way to add a second country to your trip without much effort.
