Citytrip Göteborg
5 Practical tips for a citytrip to Göteborg, Sweden
Göteborg (a.k.a. Gothenburg) is Sweden’s second-largest city and a surprisingly fun destination for a city trip. During our Interrail journey through Scandinavia and Finland, we made a stop here and immediately loved the relaxed atmosphere, pretty streets, and nice parks. Here are 5 practical tips for your visit to Gothenburg!
1. Easy to reach by train from Malmö, Stockholm, or Oslo
Gothenburg is well connected by train from other major cities. From Malmö or Stockholm, it takes just a few hours, and it’s also easy to travel from Oslo, Norway. The train station is right in the city centre, so you can start exploring immediately—perfect for a stop during an Interrail trip!
2. Explore the city centre and photogenic spots
The city centre of Gothenburg is compact and cosy. There are plenty of charming streets, trendy cafés, and beautiful buildings. We wandered through the centre and discovered many photogenic spots, like colourful façades, pretty squares, and canals with small bridges. It’s a great way to soak up the city’s atmosphere!
3. Visit Feskekörka and Haga
One of the most famous places in Gothenburg is Feskekörka, the ‘Fish Church’. This indoor fish market looks like a church and is a fun spot to taste fresh fish or just explore. Nearby is Haga, a charming neighbourhood full of wooden houses, vintage shops, and cosy cafés. Don’t forget to try a cinnamon bun (kanelbulle)—they are famously large here!
4. Relax in Trädgårdsföreningen Park
In the heart of the city is Trädgårdsföreningen, a large city park where you can walk, picnic, or simply relax. There’s a beautiful greenhouse with tropical plants, and the atmosphere is very peaceful. For a nice view of the city, walk or climb up to Skansen Kronan, an old fortress on a hill. The climb can be a bit challenging, but the view is worth it.
5. Rent an electric scooter for longer distances
Gothenburg is easy to explore on foot, but some areas can be hilly. We rented an electric scooter from Bolt to cover longer distances, especially in the park. It’s practical and fun! We also quickly reached Lejontrappan, a lovely staircase along the canal where you can sit and watch the world go by.
Our takeaway: Gothenburg is worth visiting
Gothenburg may not be the first city that comes to mind for a city trip, but it’s a really nice destination in Scandinavia. The city is compact, charming, and easy to reach by train—making it a perfect stop during an Interrail trip. Whether you enjoy cosy streets, good food, beautiful parks, or scenic viewpoints, Gothenburg has it all. With its mix of culture, nature, and Scandinavian charm, it’s a city that will definitely surprise you. We had a great time and would love to visit again!
