Bulgaria

Hidden gem just a few hours away by plane

Discover the mountains, monasteries and tranquillity of Bulgaria

Most people know Bulgaria mainly for Sunny Beach — sun, sea and nightlife. But what do we really know about the rest of the country? Not much, because the inland areas are still surprisingly undiscovered. That made us curious.

In 2022, we decided to explore it ourselves. And honestly, we were amazed by how beautiful it is. Green mountains, ancient monasteries, quiet villages and vast nature parks… Personally, I found the inland even more beautiful than the well-known eastern coast.

We flew to Sofia, the capital, which is about a three-hour flight from Cologne. From there, we went on a two-week road trip with a rental car. In a short time, you can drive from rugged mountain landscapes to charming towns, warm springs, and centuries-old traditions. Beaches, history, nature and peace — Bulgaria has it all, but without the crowds of tourists. That’s exactly what makes it so special.

About Bulgaria

Most people know Bulgaria for Sunny Beach, but the inland areas often stay under the radar. In 2022, we decided to explore it ourselves — and it turned out to be a real success. Green mountains, monasteries, tranquillity and tradition: we even found it more beautiful than the coast. From Sofia, we drove across the country in a rental car over two weeks. Beaches, history and nature come together here in an unexpectedly beautiful way.
